We are delighted to offer Hormonal and Copper coil fitting appointments at Willow Health, Stirling.
We offer fitting for all purposes:
Contraception
Bleeding problems
as part of Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)
How does a Hormonal coil work?
A hormonal coil is a small T-shaped device that sits within the womb and slowly releases progesterone hormone. This helps to keep the lining of the womb nice and thin, as well as increases mucus around the cervix to act like a barrier to sperm. For some women, it can stop ovulation occurring.
Benefits
Very effective treatment for heavy or painful periods
An effective contraceptive
A Mirena coil offers the best form of protection for the lining of the womb when you are taking oestrogen as part of your HRT
Can be used for 5 years as part of HRT, and 8 years for contraception
How does a Copper coil work?
A copper coil is a small T-shaped device that which has a copper coating. The copper repels sperm within the womb and stops any fertilised egg from implanting.
Benefits
Hormone-free - this is particularly useful if you have had problems with hormonal side effects in the past
Cannot be used as part of HRT but is an effective contraceptive
Can be used for 5-10 years depending on the type of device, though can be used for longer if fitting after the age of 40
Why choose a Mirena coil as part of your HRT
A Mirena can be a great choice as the progesterone aspect of your HRT. It can have a triple purpose during the perimenopause and menopause as it:
– helps to keep bleeding settled which often can become a problem around the perimenopause
– covers contraception which is still required during the perimenopause
– provides the best protection for your womb when you are using HRT
The coil fitting procedure
Before your appointment
You will be sent a electronic consent form with all the details about having a coil fitted. You will have opportunity to ask the specialist any questions prior to committing to your appointment.
During your appointment
Having a coil fitted is a simple procedure usually lasting about 15-20 minutes. We use local anaesthetic gel or spray applied to your cervix to make you as comfortable as possible. When inserting a coil, many women can experience cramping and discomfort. We will ask you to take some paracetamol or ibuprofen 30 minutes prior to your appointment time. Following your coil fit, you can resume your usual activities.
After your appointment
It is common to experience some intermittent cramping for a few days and some light bleeding or spotting. Most women are able to check their coil after a few weeks by having a feel for the 2 fine threads which come out of the cervix by a few centimetres. We can arrange to see you for a coil check if you have any problems at all.
Coil removals & replacements
We offer coil removals (for any type of coil) as well as replacement of coils.
It is common to continue to use a Mirena coil throughout the perimenopause and menopause as part of HRT, so a replacement every 5 years is required.
